Frequently asked questions

What types of challenges does GIST help partners address and what impact does that create?
GIST works with clients and partners operating in complex and high-risk environments. Recent work has ranged from due diligence and contextual analysis in hard-to-access markets, to designing strategy and operational plans in politically sensitive contexts, developing context monitoring and early warning systems, and strengthening institutional capacity and cross-agency coordination through training and mentoring. We work through local networks and domain experts who provide access, verification and interpretation that remote analysis cannot.
What’s it like to partner with GIST?
We start by understanding each client's context, requirements and intended outcomes, then  agree a clear, quality-assured delivery plan. Some clients want close collaboration throughout; others prefer us to work independently and report back. We adapt to either. Every engagement is handled with the same attention to accuracy, accountability and confidentiality.
How does GIST draw on local knowledge during projects?
Much of our work depends on stakeholder consultations, direct engagement with research and training participants where they live and work, and developing robust partnerships in places that are difficult to reach. We work with local experts and organisations who understand these contexts from the inside, which is often the only way to gather information where open-source data and remote analysis fall short. Technology extends what we can cover, but the analysis rests on evidence gathered on the ground..
How does GIST draw on local knowledge during projects?
Much of our work depends on field research, stakeholder consultations and participatory mapping in places that are difficult to reach. We work with local researchers and networks who understand these contexts directly, which is often the only way to get reliable information where remote analysis falls short. Technology extends what we can cover, but the analysis rests on evidence gathered on the ground.
How does GIST use technology in its work?
We use technology where it helps achieve a client's objectives.  Our Geospatial Information System (GIS) combines satellite imagery, environmental indicators and field data to analyse dynamics that are difficult to observe directly. We also bring open-source investigations expertise to support due diligence and strategic analysis, and build bespoke software where a client's problem requires it. We use large language models to assist our analysts on specific tasks, such as processing large volumes of open-source material - but we only use fine-tuned open-source, local models on premise when working with sensitive data. . Technology is used to extend analyst judgement - not to replace it.
How does GIST protect data and uphold ethical standards?
GIST operates under strict data protection and research ethics protocols, holds Cyber Essentials Plus certification, and complies with international standards. Where required, we handle complete data pipelines offline and process information on-premise using local models.  We apply a Do No Harm approach, seek informed consent, and maintain safety and security processes to protect both our researchers and the people they speak with. Our ethical and technical policies are reviewed regularly.
